Welcome to Cuban Word of the Day!
Dime con quien andas y te dire quien eres!...tremendo embarque...fulanito,menganito & siclanito and my all time favorite: te la comiste!
….What a sweet sound...I could still hear my grandmother telling me “Nina, los vagos trabajan doble” and if you ask any of my children they will tell you, “Lazy people work twice as hard”...
As you can see, Cuban Word Of The Day is a collection of our childhood and our parents’/grandparents’ old Cuba. When I left Cuba over 40 years ago, I was very fortunate to grow up in the USA and even luckier to have Cuban parents. I’ve always felt I’ve had the best of both worlds and in my life the one thing I’ve always been proud of is that I’m Cuban!
I hope you will enjoy these words and expressions that are part of the words and phrases (dichrachos) that we grew up with!
Growing up with Cuban parents was a gift. I’ve always felt my children have missed out on what I took for granted, so it’s been a long time goal to leave them with as much of our culture as possible. Cuban word of the day is a great beginning. With the help of Facebook, we've shared our shared memories of our Cuban Spanish!!!
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the emails I have received from so many of you thanking me for letting you see a slice of Cuban culture that is near and dear to my heart and to many of you as well.
Just like with any other language, Cuban speech has sounds, phrases and dialects that are our own variety of Spanish. Cubans have a stock of words and expressions that can vary according to our generation. When we hear family members, friends or even strangers who speak in that language, it is music to our ears.
This has been a fun adventure for me. Since this is inspired by a joyful feeling, a ton of nostalgic memories and my love of the Cuban culture, I’m honored to be the “messenger” who delivers this little bit of happiness to people every day. I have included the suggestions of many of you on Facebook and now we have a separate place for words and phrases.
I can’t help but feel that I have been chosen to start this website and I am so happy to hear people tell me that the Cuban Word of the Day has become an important part of their life. I have to pinch myself every time I read an email thanking me for Cuban word of the day...I THANK YOU for the honor. I've never been so sure of anything in my life, since for me there is no fear in anything Cuban!
For my generation of Cubans and those who are a generation behind mine, this website allows me to leave something meaningful behind. I want to leave my children as much as possible since so much of our culture stands the risk of being lost. I think it is so important to preserve our culture and I thank all of you for your support to help me keep it alive for all of us. I invite you to post your comments, words, dichos, poetry, events and pictures.
I hope the products
that we've put together will bring you happiness and laughter. Most important of all, let’s keep alive the FUN we share by being Cuban.
Thank you sooooooo much for visiting Cuban word of the day and don't ever forget “CUBA SERA LIBRE!”
